CHAPTER 15

While waiting for her car to warm up, Jane sat with Mike in his. They’d started brainstorming over what they knew, and Jane was soaking up any time she could spend alone with Mike.

“I’ll see about contacting Jeremy Jensen so that we can have a conversation with him,” he told her as he adjusted the vents. The air was barely warm, but still warmer than it was outside.

She nodded. “But is any of this going to do any good if that officer says it was an accident?”

“Don’t worry about that. I contacted the medical examiner,” he explained. “I know him fairly well and I asked him to keep an eye open for any sign that Richard Wheeler's death was not an accident. He’s going to let me know if our intuition was right or not.”

“When will you know for sure if he found anything?” Jane asked. She’d been watching the traffic go by the parking lot but turned to look at him.

“Hard to say. Hopefully soon, though,” he said. His eyes lingered on her and she saw them darken. “You look amazing today. Did I tell you that?”

She smiled self-consciously. “I think so.”

“Well, you look good enough to say it again.” As he looked at her, he seemed to be looking at something he liked. It wasn’t a predatory gaze, but more appreciative.

Jane found her eyes focused on his lips as they barely quirked up at the corners. He had a very slight beard starting to grow and she wondered if it was because it was winter. She realized then that she didn’t know a whole lot about his day-to-day choices and that surprised her. They’d been spending more and more time together, but they didn’t always have a chance to really talk.

“What’s wrong?” he asked gently as he reached for her hand. “You looked happy for a moment and then something crossed your face.”

“I just realized we don’t really talk. I mean, we do but…”

“But not about the more important stuff?” he asked carefully.

“Yeah,” she said as she turned in her seat to face him better. “You noticed too?”

“I noticed, but I think it’s fairly normal for this phase. I’m not actively trying to not tell you stuff, if that helps?”

“Me neither,” she sighed. “It seems like it might be too much if I did try to fill you in on everything.”

“Same,” Mike said, chuckling. “I’ll tell you when I think something applies, but I’m not really the kind of person to go over every grievance I've had in my life all in one sitting. Or list off the favorites in my life and why I enjoy them so much.”

Jane laughed. “Please don’t. Although I don’t mind hearing about your favorites, whenever you feel like sharing.”

“You’ve always been one of my favorite people even before, when we were young and foolish.” He smiled and she swore it suddenly grew ten degrees warmer in the car.

“I always really liked you too,” she admitted, and she had a feeling that she had to be blushing.
